Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these drugs should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
